The Civil Rights Movement gained momentum in the 1950s. Beginning particularly in 1954 when the Supreme Court overturned the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson â€Å"separate but equal† ruling that had allowed the South to maintain segregated schools from elementary school to graduate school. Typically, accommodations for black citizens were inferior to their white counterparts. Also in 1954, the Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that segregated schools violated the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. This case focused on Linda Brown, a seven year old whose parents wanted to send her to an all-white school that was closer to their home. The NAACP lawyers successfully demonstrated to the Court that by being segregated†¦show more content†¦National television coverage of the boycott turned King into an overnight celebrity and allowed him to appeal to moderates throughout the country. White resistance to the MIA convinced them to broaden thei r demands to include complete desegregation of the buses. After almost a year the Montgomery Bus Boycott was successful. In November, 1956 the Supreme Court ruled that segregated buses were unconstitutional. King and other ministers from Southern states formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) two months later. The SCLC decided that black churches could assist the Civil Rights Movement implement a nonviolent strategy of action that would challenge segregation across the South. King encouraged other black citizens to use nonviolent civil disobedient demonstrations to prevent authorities from using violence against them. In 1958, an SCLC campaign began to occupy Nashville’s segregated lunch counters. This became known as a sit-in. During these sit-ins, protesters would occupy seats at white-only lunch counters and would stay there even after they were refused service. This became a peaceful way to break the law and call attention to the unfairness of segregation. In 1960, the spontaneous decision of four North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College Freshmen to request service at a Woolworth’s lunch counter sparked the national sit-in movement.
